Modern Apprentice Success at PHA

Over recent years, PHA has participated in a successful apprenticeship programme. We’ve employed several apprentices, giving people the opportunity to develop new skills and gain an introduction to the housing sector. Many of our apprentices have gained qualifications and gone on to secure permanent positions either with PHA or other organisations.

In July 2022, Hollie McGarry joined us as our newest Modern Apprentice. Here, we hear more from Hollie and find out how she is getting on in her role.

Why did you decide an apprenticeship was right for you?

I felt it was the right time for me to leave school – I was struggling to concentrate and show interest there. I wanted to go straight into work and start earning, while also learning. I am young and still have a lot to learn, so thought an apprenticeship seemed best for me. A big factor for me was the opportunity to gain experience and qualifications at the same time. I think this will open up opportunities for me in the future.

What made you want to apply to Partick Housing Association specifically?

I have always been interested in property and housing. I wanted to make a career out of it but didn’t really know where to start. When I saw the apprenticeship advertised, I jumped at the opportunity because it allows me to focus on this and explore all the different areas. Throughout the apprenticeship, I get to work in Factoring, Housing, Repairs, Development, Corporate and Finance teams – gaining knowledge for later life.

What have you most enjoyed about your apprenticeship so far?

I have loved working in the different teams and learning what they are all responsible for. I really enjoy working at reception, meeting all the tenants and customers coming in and out, and being able to help there. I’ve also enjoyed getting out the office and seeing the area and new homes at St Peters. I’m learning new things all the time.

And of course, I loved getting my first wage, as this is my first real job!

What advice would you give to others considering a similar role?

I would say to someone considering an apprenticeship, to go for it and make sure you try your best at every area. Don’t be worried if you don’t know something – always ask if you’re stuck, as the staff here at PHA are friendly and happy to help, and they will motivate you to keep going.

Corporate Services Manager, Jacqueline McCutcheon said: “Hollie has been a great addition to the team here at PHA. She is hard working, really proactive and keen to get involved. From her time spent on reception and helping with our Customer Advisory Panel, Hollie has already become a familiar face for some of our tenants and customers and has made some great contributions. We’re so proud of what Hollie has achieved so far.”
