Textured Coatings: Artex

Some of our customers will remember the popularity of Artex in the 1970s and 1980s. Artex was a popular decorative coating applied to ceilings and walls, and was used to create a variety of patterned designs.

Unfortunately, some Artex contains asbestos. Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals used in certain products such as building materials and insulating boards. It was used for its durability and resistance to heat and corrosion.

If you suspect you have Artex in your home, we can arrange to have this tested. It is important that you contact us before drilling any holes in textured coatings or doing any DIY that will involve breaking or disturbing this coating

Is asbestos dangerous?

The presence of asbestos in buildings does not pose a risk to health if the materials are not disturbed and are in good condition.

Is there ever a risk?

Asbestos only poses a health risk when asbestos fibres are released into the air and inhaled. This happens once a material containing asbestos is disturbed or broken and starts to deteriorate.

What would PHA do if you found asbestos in my home?

If asbestos is found in your home, we will arrange for an assessment by a specialist contractor. If they find the material is in poor condition, it will be safely removed. If it is in good condition, it will be left in place and managed.
