Throughout the school summer holidays, Partick Housing Association delivered Football Feast, a free programme of children’s football training with lunch included. Sessions were held weekly and were available for children aged 8 to 11.
We worked with experienced coaches from Partick Thistle Charitable Trust, who provided the training in Mansfield Park. The sessions offered an opportunity for children to improve their skills through fun activities focusing on skills and drills, teamwork, fair play and respect. After the children worked up their appetites, Street and Arrow (food van at Mansfield Park) served up delicious healthy lunches at our facilities within the PHA office.
We were granted funding by the Voluntary Action Fund for Glasgow City Council’s Glasgow Children’s Summer Food Programme to deliver the sessions. Additionally, we received funding support from CBC – our contractor at the St Peter’s development.
Feedback from the parents and children involved has been very positive and we are considering ways to deliver similar projects in the future. One of the participants said “I really enjoyed being outside, playing matches and the food was good. I liked EVERYTHING! I wish it was on for longer and more than one day a week!”.
Partick Thistle Charitable Trust were so impressed with the skills and enthusiasm of one of the children in particular, that they are exploring ways to encourage her development in the sport.
Viki McCormick, Community Development Officer said, “It really was a pleasure to be able to deliver this project for families in the local area. Thank you to the funders and other organisations involved in making it happen”.
