Over the past two years, Partick Housing Association has participated in a successful apprenticeship programme. The Modern Apprentice scheme gives young people the opportunity to develop new skills and an introduction to the housing sector. PHA’s Apprentices Ayleigh Waters, Ellie Ferguson and Lee Falconer have excelled in their roles and are recognised as valuable members of the organisation.
Success
Our Modern Apprentices, Ayleigh, Ellie and Lee, have surpassed our expectations. As individuals they’ve gained the confidence and qualifications they need to succeed, and they’ve brought new talent, productivity and motivation to the business.
Lee has recently completed his first year as a Modern Apprentice. Ayleigh and Ellie are both nearing the end of their second years and have secured positions with PHA – as a Business Support Assistant (Ayleigh) and a Maintenance Assistant (Ellie).
We asked Ayleigh and Lee what’s changed for them since starting their Apprenticeships:
Lee said; “Working at PHA is my first proper job since leaving school and I feel like my confidence has grown a lot. I have gained a qualification in Business Administration which has developed my skills, and I look forward to more training opportunities to come.
Since joining PHA I have got to know all the staff very well and made to feel part of the wider team.”
Ayleigh said; “A lot has changed for me since starting at PHA. I feel I am more confident, particularly when speaking to people. I get to meet new people all the time which has helped with this. I like to set myself challenges and feel good when I overcome them, building on my confidence and learning.
I love that I am able to earn money while learning. I’ve been able to treat myself and can afford to do more social things with my friends. I recently got myself a car, so it’s definitely given me more freedom working here.”
Bright Futures
Throughout Scotland and across various industries, apprenticeships are overwhelmingly successful. Figures from Skills Development Scotland, show 91% of apprentices are still in employment six months after completing their Modern Apprenticeship; and 96% of employers say former apprentices are better equipped to do their job.
When asked about their plans for the future, Ayleigh and Lee had this to say –
Lee said; “I’m enjoying my role as I continue to progress with my Modern Apprenticeship. Once it’s finished, my aspiration is to gain permanent employment at PHA as I really enjoy working here”.
Ayleigh said; “I love helping people and find it really rewarding that I can do this as part of my job. So, I hope to continue working in Housing – I feel it is the best road for me to go down”.
Our Corporate Services Manager, Jac McCutcheon recognises the hard work and valuable contributions from the Modern Apprentices; “We’re delighted that Ayleigh and Ellie have secured permanent positions within the organisation, and the future looks bright for Lee as he embarks upon the second year of his Apprenticeship. All three of them are an absolute credit to themselves and the organisation, real stars with promising futures ahead”.
To Ayleigh, Ellie and Lee – thanks on behalf of the Board, Leadership Team and wider organisation for your continued hard work and commitment”.
